Gender, Sexuality, and Coaching! with Wil Fisher

When coaching Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and gender non-binary people, having an awareness of the impacts and effects of their experiences of being outside of the heteronormative paradigm, can create deeper empathy, increased awareness of context, and allow for more trust and understanding in the coaching relationship. In this interactive workshop, we will explore many topics around gender and sexuality, through the lens of coaching clients who identify as LGBTQ or gender non-binary. Participants will leave with more knowledge on subjects related to sexuality and gender and a deeper understanding of the experiences of potential clients from this demographic. We will investigate the importance of language, then learn about, and discuss, the meaning of terms related to sexuality and gender (i.e.. queer, non-binary, sys-male/sys-female, they/them pronouns, etc.). This will also be an opportunity for participants to ask questions in a safe space, and even practice using some of these terms in an open dialogue.

Additionally, we will look at some of the unique challenges and experiences that effect many people in the LGBTQ and gender non-binary communities, so that coaches can better understand the possible context present when working with these clients. We will also discuss potential topics and areas of focus where coaching may effectively support LGBTQ and gender non-binary clients. Potential coaching topics to explore include coming out of the closet; authenticity and self-expression in the face of homophobia; internalized homophobia and the resulting mindsets and beliefs; coming out and feeling comfortable being yourself in the workplace; and more. I will share my experiences coaching LGBTQ and gender non-binary clients on some of these topics and answer any questions participants may have about working with clients belonging to these communities.

Participants will gain knowledge and a deeper awareness of some of the challenges and complexities that may impact LGBTQ and gender non-binary coaching clients. They will leave with a greater capacity to understand some of the context present when working with clients from this demographic Additionally, they will have insight into topics and areas of focus where coaching may effectively support these clients. Furthermore, participants will learn about some of the specific language and terms that are related to gender and sexuality. Through open dialogue exploring these terms and their meaning, participants will become more comfortable using them. Finally, participants will increase their sensitivity and empathy for people experiencing life outside of the heteronormative paradigm.

Participants will earn .75 Core Competency and .25 Resource Development CCEs for attending this webinar.

Wil Fisher is a life coach, facilitator, producer, performer, and nonprofit professional. After graduating with a BFA in theatre from the Hartt School, Wil moved to NYC and found his energy pulled towards social rights issues affecting LGBTQ youth. He served as the director of special events for the Ali Forney Center (AFC), the nation’s largest organization dedicated to housing homeless LGBTQ youth. While at AFC, Wil earned his MA in applied theatre from CUNY. He then utilized applied theater techniques to support students in changing their school's culture around the perceptions of LGBTQ people. He has brought this methodology to men's work with the company he co-founded, Man Question, which offers workshops addressing our relationship to masculinity with groups ranging from LGBTQ groups to inmates at a maximum-security men's prison. Later, Wil served as the Executive Director of Easton Mountain, an LGBT retreat center where he worked with former ICF president Damian Goldvarg to launch the first LGBTQ Coaches Training program. He attended that program and became a certified life coach. He is a Fellow Coach with BetterUp and the founder of Willfully Living, his life coach practice that focuses on supporting gay, bi, trans and queer men.
